Marketing to the Gen Y Consumer

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Written by Erica Campbell, Gillian Luce and Kimetha Hill

“Gen Yers,” “Echo Boomers,” “Millennials,” “Net Generation,” “Trophy kids,” whatever you want to call them, are you ready to market to them? The largest generation since the Baby-Boomers, the Y Generation is defined by their numbers. Generation Y, born between 1977 and 1994, makes up over 70 million people in the U.S.; which equates to 20% of today’s population. 1 Growing up in the age of technology has definitely given them an edge. In a world where YouTubeTM videos, MySpace® friends and common lingo including terms like ‘OMG,’ ‘LOL,’ ‘I Facebooked you,’ ‘BBIM,’ and ‘I tweet,’ building and sustaining relationships with consumers has become increasingly difficult, forcing marketers to reach beyond familiar and traditional strategies and techniques.

Web 2.0 platforms, mobile devices and video sharing sites are not merely evolutionary changes in the world of marketing. They are revolutionary. As marketers we need to reach Gen Y through an integrated marketing strategy which includes advertising on multiple platforms such as print, Internet, social networking sites, video sharing sites, text messaging, mobile Web sites, and the like. In a study conducted by Junco and Mastrodicasa: “Research on ‘The Net.Generation,’” they found that 97% of students owned a computer, 94% owned a cell phone, and 56% owned an MP3 player (iPod, Zune, Sansa, etc.). In that same study, 69% of students polled reported having a Facebook account, 28% reported owning a blog and 44% reported reading blogs.

Generation YWho Are They?

Gen Y is well educated and will have a huge social and economic impact. They are very independent due to divorce, day care and single parents. According to NAS Recruitment Communications, they were raised by “active parents,” who gave children lots of attention. They are very technologically savvy and thrive on networking and connecting with their friends and families through instant communication. Gen Yers, also known as Millenials, are considered efficient multi-taskers who will get things done faster and better than their competition. Often times Millennials can be curious, expressive and impatient while demanding instant gratification.

How Do You Gain Gen Y’s Attention?

Have your message available to them across multiple platforms. For Rent Media SolutionsTM accomplishes this by enabling renters to find apartments any time, any place and strives to position your apartment listings in more places for consumers. With more than 2 million publications distributed monthly nationwide, 2.4 million visitors each month to its Web sites, more than 13,000 text messaging customers, more than 2,000 customers using its online video, For Rent Media Solutions offers more points of contact to apartment listings than anyone in the multi-housing industry. Here are four tips on how you can successfully engage with Generation Y in this ever-changing marketplace:

  1. Be available 24/7:
Today, consumers are gathering information when they want and how they want. Gen Y in particular has become accustomed to instant gratification and they prefer to receive lots of  feedback. They tend to be impatient and want answers immediately. So take that into consideration when marketing. In addition to your Web site and listings on our Web sites,  also consider having a blog. As mentioned previously, 44% of the participants from the Junco  and Mastrodicasa study reported reading blogs. That’s a huge audience! For Rent Media Solutions allows prospective renters to find apartments 24/7 via our Web sites, social media profiles, our iPhoneTM application, mobile Web site, and text messaging.Incorporate For Rent Media Solutions’ text messaging product into your advertising. This allows the apartment seeker to send a text message with your property’s unique keyword to the short    code 47368 (4RENT). The property keywords can be seen on leasing banners, yard signs at the property, and in For Rent Media Solutions’ magazines. By texting the keyword, apartment  seekers receive a response text message with information about the specific property.   Property managers can also use the service to send customized messages promoting specials to  potential renters, as well as important messages and alerts to their current residents.
  2. Listen:
Gen Y is very blunt and expressive and making their point is important to them. Listen carefully to their wants and needs and analyze their behavior. According to a Cone Business study in September 2008, 93% of people using social media believe a    company should have a presence in social media and 85% believe a company should go further than just having a presence and should also interact with its consumers via social media. For Rent Media Solutions continues to push to be more social and find new ways to engage its consumers.  ForRent.com has taken a strategic approach to get in and get social and take their efforts to the next level with sites such as Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and Twitter to maximize their  reach. For Rent Media Solutions likes to encourage feedback from its users and wants to hear what they     want in order to provide a better apartment searching experience for them. The company diligently follows up with customers whenever they have a question or comment whether it is   sent in the form of an email, MySpace message, YouTube video comment, Facebook message or a Tweet. Engaging with consumers provides a better experience for them while also giving companies necessary feedback.
  3. Be Creative:
Gen Y likes to mix it up and keep it new. So your advertising to them needs to be creative in order to catch their attention. Things you’ve done in the past may not necessarily work for the future. Being innovative and thinking outside the box is vital! ForRent.com launched its second  annual video contest on April 1. The “Ready2Move?” video contest at http://contest.forrent.com/ asked apartment seekers to tell ForRent.com in a 60 second or less video why they are ready to     move, for a chance to win $10,000. The concept gives users lots of flexibility with their     responses and also allows for plenty of room for fun and creative interpretation.
  4. Go Green:
The green revolution is more important to members of Gen Y than it ever was in the past. Gen Y has grown up with efforts to help save the environment and help preserve it for future   generations. Therefore, they are much more willing to alter their point of view on a company if        they know they are committed to conserving resources and finding innovative ways to be eco-friendly.  For Rent Media Solutions understands the big impact that corporations can have on the   environment. Here are some ways that we are helping to protect the planet: All newsprint pages   are printed on recycled paper and our insert cards are printed on a UV press that uses non    hazardous inks and do not emit VOC’s into the atmosphere. We also recycle all of the metal for the plates, and the ink/water/fountain solution. In addition to using eco-friendly methods during our business practices, we also provide ‘going   green’ tips and green living blogs for apartment renters and property managers. These tips range from using ‘green’ products to clean your apartment, purchasing  energy efficient appliances, ways to save on water, heat and electricity and how apartment communities can benefit from ‘going green.’

The bottom line is that Gen Y is making waves. Understanding the needs and wants of the Y generation is one of the most important steps in marketing to them and retaining them as your customers.  In order to reach Gen Y, brands need to keep their advertising simple, be available, be authentic, be trendy and be where they are by providing them with what they want.

Prepare your Home for the Summer

Monday, August 30th, 2010

As the mercury touches the 40 degree mark, all we want is something to keep us cool. When the days are long and the air is warm don’t you just wish you could escape to a shady, comfortable place? And what better if that place happens to be your home. Make your home cheerful. Bring a fresh look of summer in your home with quick an easy additions of colour, style, and accessories.

Not everyone has the luxury of moving to the mountains to enjoy the “lazy days of summer.” But most of us can bring the look of summer into the home. It is not necessary to change every room or throw out all the old furniture, but there are lots of ways to lighten up and freshen up your home for a wonderful summer seasonal change. You may even feel like you’ve moved away for the summer.

There are a number of things you can do inside your home to make it look more comfortable. Why not try some of these simple, easy changes to “summerise” your home?

LIGHTEN UP

The first rule of summer decorating is -lighten up! If you haven’t folded up those cozy winter blankets and flannel sheets and tucked them safely in the closet yet, now’s the time. Wash and air them outside first, and try placing small sachets of dried rosemary or lavender between sets on the closet shelf – you’ll love the lingering fragrance when you shake them out again in the fall. Change the image of your home and make it a nice change from what it was a year back. Keeping away winter stuff could make a good beginning to welcome the summer but keep the sun away.

CURTAINS

Go for sheets and curtains that represent your summer spirit. Heavy drapes are a no-no in summer decorating, trapping heat in and blocking out welcome sunshine from a room. Invest in some sheer, pretty curtains that offer some privacy while keeping a room feeling cool and open. White is always a good choice, but don’t shy away from soft new pastel shades that coordinate with your summer sheets and bed covers.

LINEN

Try to get a simple slipcover for the back or seat of your kitchen or dining room side chairs. The look will soften an all-wood chair and freshen the look of an upholstered seat. Add fresh flowers and plants to your guest room or bedroom. Enjoy colourful, cheery, suntmery new flowered bed linens.

COLOURS FOR SUMMER

Nothing brightens up a room like white. Add it wherever you can. How about frothy, light curtains, fresh white trims, or a painted chair or table? Lighten up drab bookshelves. Paint the back wall and even the side walls with a bright, summery color. The books will really “pop out” against the contrasting color. How about lime green in dark wood shelves or sky blue on yellow. Choose a color that complements your rooms decorating scheme. Choose a fresh color scheme of lemon yellow, apple green, or sky blue.

CHOOSE YOUR ART

Frame some simple botanical prints or landscapes and set them up on a bookshelf, bureau, or table top. Or hang a series of summery flower pictures down a dark hallway. Use simple plate holders to hold pretty floral plates. Set them on a table or buffet.

Whatever you do, try to make your home a cool and comfortable place for the summers.

Don’t Buy Earth4Energy Before You Read This Report

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Tall claims about DIY(Do It Yourself) energy products have kept me amused and appalled for several months now. Just take a look at following claim and you’ll understand:

“A Long Kept Secret For Generating Free Electricity is Finally On The Open, And You’ll Never Have To Pay A Single Dime to the Power Company”

How on earth can someone generate free energy? This is against the first law of thermodynamics that is “energy cannot be created or destroyed, only modified in form.” So, the promoter of aforesaid energy product is claiming something considered impractical  as per known physical laws.

One more product that made such claim states:

“A rarely known device, which will create zero point absolutely free energy, and could fully eliminate your power bill for life!”

Regardless of being a science student,  I’m not sure what these marketers are referring to and am sure that these products are nothing but scams.

So when I saw Earth4Energy site, I was extremely doubtful. With already lost trust in DIY energy products, I considered Earth4Energy to be just like the two products mentioned above.

I promised myself to devote just 5 minutes on their site.

The first difference I noticed is that Earth4Energy offers a simple guide to build your own solar panels. “So they are not selling any free power product at least,” was my thought.

I’ve seen many other guides on solar energy and I had comparable figures to compare with Earth4Energy plans. See for yourself what I found about Earth4Energy.

Can I build solar panels with Earth4Energy guide?

Yes it is but only if you have some fundamental skills. Let’s put it this way: If you can pull together IKEA furniture of your own, you can build the solar panel comfortably. Otherwise, you’d require a little more time than usual but it is doable. Earth4Energy has divided their guide in 6 parts which helps to keep the process simple.

Can I build a working solar panel for about $100 as Earth4Energy claims?

You would not probably make your first solar panel for less than $100. I asked a friend to do some calculations as per Earth4Energy guide and come up with a minimum cost and time to build my first solar panel. See what he came up with.

Estimates

So it’s not going to be $100, but about $140.00.

Time estimate that he came up with was 2-3 days for an experienced person and (4-5 days for a complete newbie. Not bad!

So, now  I am sure that Earth4Energy is not a scam. I found that they provide many good books “The Solar Calculator,” “How To Install and Mount Solar Panels,” and also a guide to calculate your “Solar Tax Credits And Rebates.” “Electrical wiring plans” are also  part of the package.

Earth4Energy bundle also includes very helpful stepwise video instructions (with on-screen captions) hand-holding you from beginning to end in making your own solar panel. Another bunch of videos that is included in the bundle guides about the solar power in detail.

Additionally, Earth4Energy also includes a free guide to make your own home made wind turbine. This is a nice addition and would guide you in creating  a backup to solar energy for those cloudy, windy times.

Is Earth4Energy worth spending my money on?

At $246.00, it is prohibitively expensive and not worth the money. But, they have a promotion running at present where one can get Earth4Energy for a discounted price of $49.97. For this price, it is really advised to go for this amazing product and enjoy your free electricity for years to come.

10 Holiday Eating Tips From Cedars – Sinai Nutrition Expert

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Los Angeles, CA (Dec. 21, 2008) – The holiday season may bring visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads, but trouble can ensue when pies, cakes, cookies and other fatty holiday treats start dancing on our plates.

With careful planning and smart choices, you can have your fill of holiday cheer without filling your plate with calorie-rich foods, said Netty Levine, RD, CDE, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, at Cedars- Sinai Medical Center.

“You can enjoy your favorite traditional holiday foods in moderation without dragging extra pounds into the New Year,” Levine said. “Make smart choices at parties and in buffet lines, and on days you’re not celebrating make sure you’re eating healthy, well-balanced meals.”

Fitting in exercise, drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy diet will not only be good for your waist line, but can also ensure you have enough energy for the season’s many celebrations, Levine said.

She offers these suggestions for sensible eating during the holidays:

1. Vow to maintain, not gain. If you’re on a long-term weight loss plan, make every effort to maintain your weight. Maintaining weight despite the season’s many temptations should be considered a reasonable goal.

2. When going to  a holiday potluck, bring along a healthy dish or treat you enjoy. Find ways to lighten up traditional recipes, or bring along a vegetable or fruit tray. Presentation and creativity count!

3. Never go to a party hungry. Eat a small healthy meal or snack to ward off cravings, which can help make temptation easier to resist.

4. Drink water. Avoiding high-calorie beverages will make those holiday splurges easier on your waistline.

5. When dining buffet-style, choose a smaller plate and pile it high with fruits, vegetables and green salads. Load up on lean roasted meats, and choose small portions of your holiday favorites

6. Dodge the pre-dinner cocktail. Alcohol makes you hungrier, and lower inhibitions can lead to poor food choices. Opt instead for a drink with your meal. When ordering cocktails, reach for those made with a low- or no-calorie mixer.

7. Don’t be too busy for breakfast. Starting the day with a healthy meal will help control cravings later.

8. Be picky about dessert. Indulge only in your very favorites, and when presented with several dessert options, choose just one. Check in with yourself when eating. Do you want the whole portion of a rich treat, or do you feel satisfied after a few bites?

9. Make time for exercise – be active when you can. Even short bits of exercise can add up.

10. Focus on friends and family, not the food. Make the company of loved ones the center of your gathering – not the tasty treats.

Move Out of the Reuse-recycle Mantra

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

What does green printing mean? Is it only confined to FSC certification, the use of recycled paper and soy ink or does it have any other dimension? I agree that FSC certification is important and recycled papers and soy ink have contributed significantly to combat growing environmental hazards. However, there has been a fresh debate on the effectiveness of these measures.

Soy ink is being used extensively by green printing companies. For years, offset printers have used soy ink to good effect but does it prove equally beneficial for flexographic printers- actually not. The truth is green companies have become lazy and do not want to dig deeper into finding more green solutions. They are just happy voicing the monotonous terms “recycled”, “renew”, “green”, “reusable” and what not. A much appreciable step will be the analysis of “green issues” that would help them take the cause of sustainability to a much higher level.

Most green printing companies talk about using recycled paper, which is easy and affordable.  However, the real matter of concern is these papers are not tree-pulp free. Recent studies suggest that one ton of recycled paper consumes about 4 trees, creates up to two tons of solid waste, and gives way to thousand tons of contaminated waste water. Hence recycled paper cannot be the answer to saving trees. Instead, treeless paper made from rotten plants like banana, coconut trees, papaya, or bagasse can help combat deforestation to a great extent. Besides, there are some experiments going around where paper has been produced from calcium carbonate or natural chalk. Known as Stone Paper (rock paper), these papers can revolutionize paper production as natural chalk is renewable with high sustainability.

So, what measures can we adopt to combat these upcoming green issues? The answer lies in our willingness to invest more time and thought on improving the existing green printing measures. We can start by educating those around us- friends, family, office colleagues, and neighbors- about the impending environmental threats on our beautiful planet. You can hold few sessions on how carbon emissions and depletion of non-renewable energy sources is fast landing our planet into the dungeon of hell. Learn, educate, and question but do not just be satisfied with the mantras of “reusable”, “renew”, or “recycle”.   It’s time to move out!

Gentlest Home Remedies For Acne Scars

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Which home remedies for acne scars actually work? And which acne home remedies are safe for sensitive skin? Here are some of the natural acne scar healing tips we have learned that are the gentlest and safest for sensitive skin.

Having acne is a terrible experience, and even worse are the scars that are left on your face long after the acne has healed. It can take many months for acne scars to disappear, and there are some things you can do to speed up the healing process.

Many people with sensitive skin cannot use traditional acne scar treatments such as dermabrasion or collagen injections, which are invasive and can cause irritation, rashes and other side effects.

Homemade acne treatments can be very effective, however for best results we recommend that you create a comprehensive, whole body acne treatment program which will help you clear out the root causes of your acne so that you can prevent your skin from developing more acne scars.

If you have very severe acne, you may want to consult a qualified natural health practitioner that can assist you with creating the dietary and lifestyle changes that will clear your skin and help your body heal the acne scars. They can also guide you to find acne scar treatments that are effective even for people with sensitive skin.

Tips for Using Acne Home Remedies

1. Skin test FIRST – Even the gentlest acne home remedy might not work for YOUR sensitive skin, so please be sure to do a skin test FIRST on the back of your arm or the inside of your ear, to see if these home remedies for acne scars will work for your skin.

2. Be consistent – choose a treatment, first doing a skin test as I have suggested, and if your sensitive skin does not react to the treatment, then use it faithfully for at least a week or two. See how your face looks and feels before making a final decision.

3. Find a good daily routine for your skin – Using gentle, fragrance free and hypoallergenic products will help you to cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin without triggering more acne outbreaks.

4. Treat your WHOLE body – home remedies for acne scars are not just something you dab on your pimples. You need to maximize your body’s miraculous innate healing and rejuvenating capabilities by modifying your diet and lifestyle. I know, that’s not so easy especially in today’s busy world! In order to clear your skin, you need to drink enough pure water, exercise, eat fresh, whole foods, and eliminate foods and drinks that trigger acne outbreaks.

Simplest Acne Scar Home Remedies

Many acne home remedies also work for helping acne scars to heal. Here are a few of the most popular ones, which you can find in your kitchen or at the health food store!

Ice cubes calm the inflammation, reduce the size of pimples and reduce scarring. After icing, let your face air dry.

Baking soda and water, used as a facial mask can both clear acne outbreaks and reduce scarring.

Lemon or lime juice acts as a skin lightener and will lighten the scars. You can also use this to treat acne outbreaks.

Ground organic orange peel and water can reduce acne outbreaks and help the skin heal.

Tomato and cucumber slices, applied to your face regularly will help clear up acne and reduce scarring.

Olive oil can reduce the visibility of your acne scars and help to soften them.

Green tea contains many potent antioxidants which help the skin to heal and rejuvenate.

Lavender essential oil can help acne outbreaks to heal and also will help the scars to disappear.

Vitamin E helps the skin to heal from scarring. You can apply a little to your acne scars, and also take internally.

Vitamin C also helps the skin to rejuvenate and to produce more collagen. Some facial products with Vitamin C can cause burning, so choose a good hypoallergenic product line that works for sensitive skin.

A Comprehensive Home Facial Treatment for Acne Scar Healing

If you want to do a more comprehensive treatment program for your acne with natural ingredients, this simple and very affordable program will clean your skin, open your pores, moisturize and tone your skin and reduce irritation and acne inflammations.

* Steam your face over a pan of hot water for one to three minutes with a towel over your head. For best results, do this morning and night.

* Apply a paste of baking soda mixed with a little water to your face. Leave on for one to three minutes.

* Rinse with cool water.

* Gently pat your skin dry, then wait a few minutes until your face is completely dry.

* Apply a small amount of aloe vera gel, mixed with tea tree oil. If the tea tree oil is too intense for your sensitive skin, try lavender oil. If that doesn’t work, simply use the aloe gel by itself.

These home remedies for acne scars are just the beginning. To completely clear up your skin, consider eating a more natural diet and drinking an abundance of pure, clean water. Recent research suggests that this can reduce your acne by 50% or more! Foods that have been known to cause acne outbreaks include processed foods, sugar, caffeine, and dairy products. It IS possible to completely clear up your acne and to heal your acne scars naturally!

Can Microgeneration Save Money On Your Home Utilities?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

People who have become increasingly fed up with the rise in electricity prices in recent times have already switched their supplier to a cheaper alternative but there’s even more good news with some suppliers now prepared to pay for any surplus energy that a household generates itself which can then be sold back to a supplier.

DIY electricity generation is on the increase and there is estimated to be somewhere in the region of 80,000 households who are generating all or some of their own electricity supply in the UK by using rooftop wind turbines and smaller solar powered units. This figure is set to grow now that B&Q have also started selling these kinds of power generators.

To buy a typical wind turbine and have it installed costs around £3000. Larger systems which would enable you to generate enough electricity to sell some back to the supplier could run anywhere between £4000 to £18000 depending on the size. A cheap loan could lead you on the path to self-sufficiency when it comes to power generation and the Government are doing their bit also by offering grants and tax breaks for those who are keen to take up the cause.

Usually, a grant is only given providing that you have already ensured that your home is already as energy efficient as possible but if you qualify, the grant can cover up to 50% of the cost of installing solar panels and up to 30% for other equipment. If you don’t qualify, a cheap loan might be another alternative.

There is still a lot of debate over whether or not microgeneration of this kind will ultimately save you money in the long run. Set up costs aren’t cheap and it may be many years before you’re able to reap the savings benefits.

A meter is installed which works out how much energy you are using and how much is being sent back to the supplier so you can easily work out how much you can save on your energy bills. NPower and Powergen are currently the suppliers which pay you the most for any surplus energy you generate but other suppliers are also getting in on the act. And, even if you’re not generating enough power to have any surplus left over to sell back, you will still save on your energy bills. For example, a 1.4 kw wind turbine with an annual output of 2000 kwh could supply around 60% of the consumption of the average UK home which represents a saving of £200 a year.

Microgeneration isn’t a quick fix solution to the problems of rising electricity costs. However, for those who wish to take action in making the switch to a self-sufficient lifestyle and can afford to do so, the solutions are already out there and being taken up by those who view it as a long-term investment.

Make Your Business Greener

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

The hospitality industry is on its boom. Consumption of resources and massive waste generation by hotels is polluting the city. These days travelers not only think about their pockets but also about the planet when they check in.

To help your business become efficient and improve the quality of life on the planet, going green is a must. The best way to implement green thinking in each part of company’s supply chain is to create and implement a green business plan.

  2. Involvement of employee: For leading the company’s eco-efforts, creation of a team is a must. Involvement of employees is a must.
  3. Save Water: Proper monitoring should be done to see where the water is wasted. Water conservation practices must be implemented to save water.
  4. Implement alternative energy sources: Exploring alternative opportunities like using solar energy, wind power, etc. can help save energy.
  5. Implement green policies: Policies and standards like waste disposal, using recycled material or products, alternative energy sources are the measures taken to go green.

Thus, Going Green involves examining every aspect of the company’s supply chain and identifying areas where deficiencies exist.
